La Belle-Henriette, a site in constant evolution

Gradually formed over the course of the 20th century, La Belle Henriette is one of the last true lagoons on the Atlantic coast. After being artificially separated from the ocean in 1972, it was naturally reconnected in 2014 and now evolves freely according to marine influences. Constantly reshaped by wind and tide, the dunes and sandbanks of La Belle Henriette are in constant evolution. The paths are laid out for the safety and comfort of walkers and beach-goers, as well as for the preservation of the flora and fauna.

A dynamic environment conducive to biodiversity

Far from being an ecological regression, the reconnection of the lagoon to the ocean is accompanied by rare natural habitats and unique landscapes between land and sea. This renaissance has given the lagoon a wealth of ecological functions of national and European interest. The lagoon has once again become a feeding and nursery ground for marine fish, and a major producer of food resources that form the basis of oceanic marine food chains (phytoplankton and zooplankton).

At low tide, the foreshore and salt meadows seem silent and deserted. However, this is not the case, as numerous birds and insects quietly go about their business of feeding. Higher up, sheltered from the high tides, the Black-throated Bluebird nests on the edge of the salt meadows, while the Red-necked Plover lays its eggs at the top of the beach. On the dunes, the Red Pipit appreciates the sparse vegetation to hide its nest, and the very rare Cultriped Pelobate is perfectly at home in the salt water of the ponds.

Taste the specialties of the Vendée

There’s something for everyone, so why not discover the local culinary specialities and indulge in some of the Vendée aperitifs: trouspinette, kiki vendéen, digestifs with kamok, brioches and gâches, préfou, mogettes… Something to tantalize your taste buds!
